GAZA, April 19 (Xinhua) -- Israeli tanks stationed on the border between eastern Gaza Strip and Israel struck on Friday a military post belonging to Islamic Hamas militants with no injuries reported, local media in Gaza said.

The reports quoted security officials as saying that the Israeli tanks targeted a military lookout post stationed close to the border with Israel, causing severe damage to the facility.

There has been no immediate Israeli comment on the shelling.

Israeli media reported that an Israeli army force patrolling near the fence of the border with Gaza was subjected to gunfire from the Gaza side.

The Israeli shelling came shortly before hundreds of Palestinians joined the weekly anti-Israel protests, better known as the "Great March of Return."

The highest commission of the "Great March of Return" called on earlier Friday the Palestinians to join the rallies and marches in eastern Gaza Strip.

The rallies, protests and marches, which started in late March last year, are calling on Israel to end 12 years of a tight blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip.
