Brunei royal palace receives over 100,000 visitors in 3-day opening

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, June 10 (Xinhua) -- More than 100,000 people visited Istana Nurul Iman, Brunei's royal palace during the "Open Palace" Hari Raya celebration, which lowered its curtain on Sunday.

Istana Nurul Iman sees a total of 102,621 visitors in its three-day opening. On the first day of this year's opening, 34,799 visitors were recorded and 37,434 visitors on the second day. On the last day, 30,388 people visited Istana Nurul Iman in conjunction with the annual Muslim festival of Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

As a country with around 440,000 population in 2018, Brunei has kept the tradition to open its royal palace to the public for more than three decades during the Hari Raya celebration, to enable Bruneians and foreign tourists to meet and convey their greetings to the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah as well as other members of the royal family.

According to official statistics, the palace received a total of 110,828 visitors during the "Open Palace" celebration in 2018, marking the peak since 2012 and 102,660 visitors in 2017 compared to 100,802 people in 2016.
