UNITED NATIONS, July 19 (Xinhua) -- The UN Security Council on Friday adopted a resolution on coordinating efforts to respond to the linkages between international terrorism and transnational organized crime.
Resolution 2482, which won unanimous support of the 15-member council, called upon all parties to enhance coordination of efforts at all levels in order to strengthen a global response to the linkages between international terrorism and organized crime, whether domestic or transnational, which constitute a serious challenge and a threat to international security.
It also stressed the importance of good governance and the need to fight corruption, money-laundering and terrorist financing.
The resolution strongly condemned the continued flow of weapons, including small arms and light weapons, military equipment, unmanned aircraft systems to and between terrorist organizations.
The resolution expressed concern that terrorists can benefit from organized crime as a source of financing or logistical support, through trafficking of arms, persons, drugs, artefacts and cultural property.
It further expressed concern that terrorists benefit from the illicit trade in natural resources including gold and other precious metals and stones, and proceeds of criminal activity, including kidnapping for ransom and extortion.
It called on member states to consider establishing appropriate laws and mechanisms that allow for the broadest possible international cooperation.
The resolution encouraged countries to engage relevant local communities and non-governmental actors in developing strategies to counter violent extremism as and when conducive to terrorism, as well as strategies to counter organized crime, whether domestic or transnational.
