BEIJING, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- Beijing Customs said Thursday they had captured one suspect for drug smuggling and seized 24.1 kg of cocaine, a record amount of drugs seized for a single case.

On July 30, customs officers at the Capital International Airport found two pieces of checked baggage from a CA908 flight from Sao Paulo, Brazil, filled with milk power cans when conducting X-ray inspection. Colors and characteristics shown on the images were different from those of ordinary milk powder.

After unpacking, the officers found the powdery articles sealed in 30 cans were pure white with an acidic smell. Rapid drug testing showed the powder was positive for cocaine.

The suspect, surnamed Chen, said he moved to Brazil in 1997 and knew a member of a drug trafficking gang there, who instructed him to take the two suitcases to China and hand them over to a "consignee."

Further investigation is underway.

So far this year, Beijing Customs have busted more drug smuggling cases compared with the same period last year, arresting 10 suspects and seizing 31.59 kg of drugs.
