UNITED NATIONS, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese envoy on Friday called for adherence to a political solution to the Syria crisis.
"Political solution is the only way out for the Syria issue. This is a consensus of the international community," stressed Wu Haitao, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations.
The Syrian political process has witnessed major progress in the past month. The first session of Syria Constitutional Committee was convened in Geneva and its 45-member small group will hold subsequent sessions very soon. China welcomes such developments, Wu told the Security Council.
The creation of the Constitutional Committee is a good start for the Syrian political process, and there is a need to listen carefully to the legitimate concerns of the Syrian government, maintain the independence of the work of the Constitutional Committee, and fully respect Syria's sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, he said.
He expressed the hope that parties in Syria will increase mutual understanding and gradually build trust through the discussions of the Constitutional Committee.
The committee members should put the interests of their country and people first and reach consensus as soon as possible, said Wu. The international community, including the Security Council, should provide support and do things that could help parties in Syria reduce their differences and build consensus.
