HOUSTON, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the U.S. state of Texas surpassed one million on Friday, official figures showed.
According to the Texas Health and Human Services, as of Friday, there were 1,004,983 confirmed COVID-19 cases reported in the state, 10,542 more cases than Thursday. Total fatalities reached 19,320. There were 173 new deaths reported on Friday.
In Texas, the most confirmed cases were from Harris County where the country's fourth largest city of Houston is located. Harris County has reported nearly 172,000 confirmed cases since the pandemic started to spread in the spring.
Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo implied on Thursday that restrictions could be reimposed to curb the spread of the virus.
Texas has seen a rapid increase in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in the past weeks. The latest surge has been felt acutely in some small towns such as El Paso, Lubbock and Amarillo. Experts blame social events like birthday parties and game day gatherings for the fast spread of the virus. Enditem
