Record high of 352,991 new cases take India's COVID-19 tally to over 17 mln

NEW DELHI, April 26 (Xinhua) -- India's COVID-19 tally surpassed 17 million on Monday with a fresh high of 352,991 new cases recorded in the past 24 hours, said the health ministry.

This was the fifth consecutive day when over 300,000 cases were registered in a single day.

According to the figures released by the federal health ministry, 2,812 deaths were registered in a day, taking the death toll to 195,123.

There are a total of 2,813,658 active cases in the country, with an increase of 130,907 through Sunday, as 14,304,382 people have recovered and been discharged from hospitals across the country.

The COVID-19 figures continue to peak in the country. The capital Delhi has been put under a second successive week-long lockdown till May 3.

The nationwide vaccination drive was kicked off on Jan. 16, and over 141 million vaccination doses have been administered across the country so far.

Meanwhile, over 279 million tests have been conducted in the country so far.

The national capital Delhi, one of the most COVID-19 affected places in the country, witnessed 22,933 new cases and 350 deaths through Sunday. So far 14,248 people have died in the national capital due to COVID-19, confirmed Delhi's health department. Enditem
