SYDNEY, June 11 (Xinhua) -- The Australian Olympic Committee has revealed the four surfers who will represent the country at the Tokyo Olympic Games, where surfing will debut as an Olympic medal event.
The team includes seven-time World Surf League (WSL) world champion Stephanie Gilmore, and Sally Fitzgibbons, who is a three-time champion of the International Surfing Association (ISA) World Surfing Games. Julian Wilson and Owen Wright will also make history as Australia's first Olympic surfers with the team when they take to Tsurigasaki Beach in Tokyo's east.
While the four surfers earned provisional quotas based on their 2019 World Surf League tour rankings, their tickets to Tokyo were only confirmed after competing in the ISA World Surfing Games in El Salvador in Central America this month, with Fitzgibbons winning the competition.
Australian Chef de Mission Ian Chesterman congratulated the selected athletes. "It's a fantastic opportunity for them to show what Australian surfers are capable of on the world's biggest sporting stage," he added. Enditem
