BAGHDAD, July 26 (Xinhua) -- Two airstrikes by unknown drones hit on Monday an ammunition warehouse at Hashd Shaabi military base in Najaf province south of the capital Baghdad, a statement by the Hashd Shaabi said.

The first airstrike, carried out by a drone at 3:30 p.m. local time (1230 GMT), targeted a warehouse for ammunition at a military base housing paramilitary Imam Ali Division in Najaf province, the division said in a statement.

Later, a drone carried out another airstrike on the same military base at 5:30 p.m. local time (1430 GMT), the statement said, adding that the attacks came after a reconnaissance operation in the early hours of the day.

The statement gave no further detail about the attacks but said that more details will be released later.

The Imam Ali Division is a Shiite militia affiliated with the paramilitary Hashd Shaabi.

Camps belonging to the Hashd Shaabi forces have been frequently attacked by unknown aircraft, but the Shiite militant groups repeatedly accused the United States and Israel of such attacks on their bases in Iraq.

The relation between the Hashd Shaabi and U.S. forces in Iraq has strained after Jan. 3, 2020, when a U.S. drone struck a convoy at Baghdad airport, which killed Qassem Soleimani, former commander of the Quds Force of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps, and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, deputy chief of Iraq's paramilitary Hashd Shaabi forces.
