TANGSHAN, July 28 (Xinhua) -- On the early hours of July 28, 1976, one of the deadliest earthquakes of the 20th century left the city of Tangshan in shambles, killing more than 240,000 people and injuring another 160,000. In the wake of the catastrophe, the northern Chinese port city has been striving to rebuild itself.

45 years on, Tangshan has made significant achievements in the course of recovery.

In 2017, Tangshan became one of the country's first 12 cities or economic zones which are demonstration areas for industrial transformation and upgrading.

Five emerging industries such as intelligent rail transit, robotics, electronics and intelligent instruments are forming new drivers for the city's economy.

In 2020, the GDP of Tangshan reached 721.09 billion yuan (about 110.8 U.S. dollars), with some economic indicators ranking first in Hebei Province.
