BRAZZAVILLE, March 23 (Xinhua) -- The President of the Republic of the Congo Denis Sassou Nguesso has been re-elected for another five-year term with 88.57 percent of the votes, the Interior Minister Raymond Zephirin Mboulou announced on the state television on Tuesday.
Sassou Nguesso, 77, is followed by rivals Guy Brice Parfait Kolelas (7.84 percent) and Mathias Dzon (1.9 percent). Kolelas died on Sunday during his medical evacuation to Paris after suffering from COVID-19.
Having congratulated the Congolese people who voted calmly throughout the country, the observation missions from African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) called on the candidates to accept the results and to appeal to the judge of electoral litigation in case of a dispute.
