GABORONE, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- A total of 382 people died on Botswana's roads in the first ten months this year, up 9 percent year on year, according to the country's department of transport, roads and safety on Saturday.
"Most of the road fatalities are as a result of human error and negligence," said Godwin Tlhogo, whose department falls under Botswana's ministry of transport and communications as authorities in Botswana have started to intensify road safety campaigns ahead of the festive season.
Besides human error and general negligence, some road fatalities are as a result of tyre bursts because most of the motorists driving imported vehicles from countries like Japan do not change the tyres, he said.
"Vehicle tyres being used in countries with cooler temperatures cannot sustain the extremely hot temperatures in Botswana. So motorists must change the tyres which come along with imported vehicles," said Tlhogo.
In its last year's transport and infrastructure report, Statistics Botswana reported that at least 65, 422 imported vehicles were first registrations, up by 55 percent from the corresponding period in 2017.
Of the first registration vehicles, the southern African country's statistical agency revealed that 91.5 percent of them were passenger cars with 73 percent of the cars sourced from Japan, placing the country on top of main car exporters to Botswana. Enditem
