BERLIN, June 8 (Xinhua) -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel (Christian Democratic Union) arrived in Buenos Aires on Thursday, marking the start of a three-day trip to Argentina and Mexico.
Merkel will consult with Argentinian president Mauricio Macri over the possibility of adopting a shared stance on a range of global issues areas including trade, migration and the environment.
Both politicians will subsequently host a joint press conference.
The meeting follows close on the heels of the latest Group of Seven (G7) meeting in Taormina, Italy in May and roughly four weeks before the Northern German city of Hamburg will host a summit of the Group of 20 major economies known as the G20.
Of particular interest to international observers will be how the positions staked out in the course of Merkel's visit to Latin America will differ from the stance taken by U.S. President Donald Trump since he took office.
Trump clashed with other leaders over issues such as trade and climate policy at last month's G7 meeting.
The U.S. was the only nation present not to express its support for the Paris agreement negotiated in 2015 with the intention of curbing global CO2 emissions and limiting the adverse impact of climate change.
Trump announced that the U.S. would withdraw from the Paris agreement shortly after returning to Washington from Italy, prompting heavy criticism.
Merkel has since launched an effort to shore up global support for efforts to reduce the effects of climate change by intensifying international cooperation with partners in Europe and beyond.
She is expected to further promote this agenda over the course of the next three days as she meets Argentinean and Mexican officials.
While in Buenos Aires, Merkel will also visit a Jewish Synagogue whose organ was originally manufactured in Germany in 1933 and was recently restored with the financial support of the Federal German government.
