MOGADISHU, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Families of Somalis killed in a military operation last week in the Lower Shabelle region Thursday buried their relatives after a protest demanding compensation from the government.
A lawmaker Dahir Amin Jesow confirmed the government's position that 10 civilians were killed in the operation but noted it was not intentional.
"Ten civilians were accidentally killed. We are very sorry and send our condolences to the families," said Jesow during a public funeral in Mogadishu.
The Somali government formed a ministerial team last week to investigate the killings of the people in joint military operation in Barire, Lowe Shabelle region.
The U.S. Africa Command (Africom) confirmed the operation last week noting it had learnt there could have been civilian casualties.
The joint operation which involved Somali forces and U.S. personnel last week killed the ten people, among whom were children aged between 13 and 15 years.
