JAKARTA, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- Indian officials, police, soldiers and volunteers have attempted to direct nine whales after they were stranded on a beach in Aceh province of western Indonesia, a police officer said on Monday.

The nine whales were discovered in Ujung Kareng beach of Aceh Besar district at about 9:30 a.m. Monday, said Agus Salim, police chief at Masjid Raya sub-district.

"The stranded whales were first found by villagers and sailors fishing around the place," he added.

Officials along with soldiers, policemen and volunteers are directing the whales toward deep waters, he was quoted by Merdeka media as saying.

Some of the whales suffered from injuries but it was not clear about the cause of the wounds, according to the media.
