JERUSALEM, June 20 (Xinhua) -- An Israeli soldier shot and killed a Palestinian outside Jerusalem after he tried to carry out a stabbing attack on Tuesday afternoon, the military said in a statement.
The incident took place near the military Adam checkpoint outside Kalandia, west of Jerusalem.
"An assailant armed with a knife attempted to stab military forces operating on a road between Adam Square and Kalandia," a military spokesperson said in a statement.
The military said the suspect was shot and critically wounded and later confirmed he succumbed to his wounds while still at the scene.
The incident came as U.S. President Donald Trump's Special Representative for International Negotiations, Jason Greenblatt, started his meeting with Israeli and Palestinian leaders in Jerusalem and Ramallah on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, Greenblatt is expected to be joined by Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law and his senior adviser. The two arrived in the region amidst the White House's efforts to revive the long-stalled peace talks.
The incident was the latest in a wave of violence between Israelis and Palestinians that started since mid-September.
