XIAMEN, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- Peng Liyuan, wife of Chinese President Xi Jinping, on Tuesday invited foreign guests to an advocacy activity on HIV/AIDS control in the southeastern city of Xiamen.

The activity, held at Xiamen University, aims to raise public awareness on HIV/AIDS prevention and control, especially among young people, and eliminate discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS, Peng said.

The guests were wives of heads of delegations attending the ninth BRICS summit and the Dialogue of Emerging Market and Developing Countries, including the wives of South African President Jacob Zuma and Guinean President Alpha Conde.

Peng said the activity will help promote health cooperation among BRICS countries and other developing countries.

Peng and the guests watched an exhibition on HIV/AIDS control efforts in universities and listened to an anti-AIDS report.

Thanks to the efforts of Peng, who is also the World Health Organization goodwill ambassador for tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS, the activity has been conducted at more than 50 Chinese universities, an official of China's National Health and Family Planning Commission said.

The activity was held after the ninth BRICS summit and the Dialogue of Emerging Market and Developing Countries.

BRICS countries refer to Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

China, which holds the rotating presidency of BRICS this year, has proposed "BRICS Plus" to invite leaders of five other developing countries -- Egypt, Mexico, Thailand, Tajikistan and Guinea -- to the summit for the dialogue.
