BRASILIA, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- Brazil's President Michel Temer faced new charges of obstruction of justice and illicit association on Thursday, which was filed by prosecutor-general Rodrigo Janot to the Supreme Court.
Temer was accused along with six other political allies, Janot's office said in a statement.
But Temer was widely believed to have enough support in Congress to avoid being forced to face trial.
This is the second time the president has been charged this year. In May, he was accused of passive corruption after meatpacking giant JBS executives turned over evidence that Temer had sought bribes from them and approved them for other politicians.
However, this initial charge did not lead to a trial as it was later dropped by the Chamber of Deputies.
The criminal charges must be first accepted by the Supreme Court before being sent for debate in the lower house.
