375 people killed in Thailand's road accidents during New Year holiday

BANGKOK, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- A total of 375 people have been killed and over 3,600 others injured in road accidents during the New Year holiday throughout Thailand.

The Center for Prevention and Reduction in Road Accidents during the New Year period said on Wednesday that 375 people have been reportedly killed and 3,612 others injured in road accidents from Dec. 28 to Jan. 2 at varied spots nationwide.

The festive period has seen a total of 3,456 road crashes which resulted in fatalities and injuries of New Year revelers, according to a spokesman of the ad hoc center under care of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation.

The northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima has seen the highest fatality rate at 15 during the six-day period.

The mishaps had mostly resulted from driving under the influence of alcohol and carelessly speeding, he said.
