Sri Lankan president inaugurates new flyover in Colombo

COLOMBO, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena on Monday inaugurated a new flyover constructed to ease in the capital city's traffic congestion.

The four-lane flyover was opened in Rajagiriya, with a total length of 533 meters and total width of 21.4 meters.

The President's Office said in a statement that the construction works of the flyover commenced in 2016 jointly by a Spanish company and a local company.

"This will be added to our roadways history as the first flyover constructed filling concrete surfaces on metal. This is also the most beautiful flyover in Sri Lanka," the President's Office said.

During peak traffic hours, the speed of vehicles moving along the Rajagiriya road is less than 2 kilometers per hour. With this highway, speed limits of vehicles is expected to increase eightfold.
