ACCRA, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Authorities in Ghana have raised their level of alertness following reports of listeriosis food poisoning in South Africa, a statement said Thursday.
The statement signed by Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, Minister of Health, noted with concern the reports of the outbreak of listeriosis, caused by bacteria listeria monocytogenes, in South Africa.
The bacteria can contaminate dairy products, vegetable and fruits. The disease is serious but preventable and treatable.
"In view of the public health concern and to avoid a similar outbreak here in Ghana the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) is monitoring the situation and has increased surveillance on meat, dairy, vegetable and fruit products from South Africa to ensure that they are not contaminated," the statement said.
The import of fruits, vegetables, meat and dairy products from South Africa to Ghana is of significant quantity.
The statement assured Ghanaians there was no cause for alarm as authorities would continue to monitor imports from South Africa.
