ALGIERS, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia is keen to boost cooperation with Algeria, particularly in the economic field, a visiting senior Indonesian official said Monday.
Hassan Wirajuda, special envoy of Indonesia's President Joko Widodo, told reporters after handing over a message to Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika.
"I came to Algeria to convey a message from Indonesian President to his Algerian counterpart, in which he expressed the desire of Indonesia to boost and further strengthen bilateral relations, especially in the economic field," said Wirajuda, the former Indonesian foreign minister.
The Indonesian official further specified that the targeted sectors that could be developed are hydrocarbons, housing, infrastructure, and electronics industry.
Wirajuda indicated that he proposed to President Bouteflika for the establishment of a 1-billion-dollar joint venture to produce fertilizers and their derivatives, adding that Indonesia is also considering building a mega highway across the African continent.
On the other hand, the Indonesian emissary hailed the commitment of President Bouteflika to enlarging the bilateral economic partnership and facilitating the operations of Indonesian companies in Algeria.
Wirajuda also indicated that he officially demanded Bouteflika support Indonesia's candidacy for becoming a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, during the elections in June.
