TOKYO, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks retreated Thursday morning as the yen's rise against the U.S. dollar weighed on exporter issues and prompted concerns for Japanese company's earnings and outlooks.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 217.18 points, or 0.91 percent, from Wednesday to 23,723.60.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 13.06 points, or 0.69 percent, to 1,888.17.

Transportation equipment, bank and electric appliance-oriented issues led those that declined the most by the morning break.
