BEIJING, Jan. 25 (Xinhuanet) -- A type of onion could help the fight against antibiotic resistance in cases of tuberculosis (TB), a recent study has suggested.
The study was jointly led by Birkbeck, University of London and University College London.
The team started the research by extracting bulbs from Persian shallot --- a staple of Iranian cooking, and then synthesized four different chemical compounds.
It conducted tests on these four compounds and found all of them have showed a significant reduction in the presence of the bacteria in the multidrug-resistant TB.
Thus, the team concluded that the antibacterial properties extracted from the Persian shallot might increase the effects of existing antibiotic treatment, and work as templates for new drug to combat strains of TB.
