Iran passes bill to join UN anti-transnational crime resolution

TEHRAN, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- Iranian Majlis (parliament) passed a bill to join the United Nations Convention Against Transnational Organized Crime, local media reported on Thursday.

In an open session on Wednesday, lawmakers overwhelmingly passed the bill that had been submitted to Majlis about four years ago, Financial Tribune reported.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani's representative to Majlis supported the bill, calling it "one of the unavoidable necessities of the country at present."

Adopted by the UN General Assembly on Nov. 15, 2000, and coming into force on Sept. 29, 2003, the resolution is the main international instrument in the fight against transnational organized crime.
