NEW DELHI, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- Authorities in India's northeastern state of Assam on Saturday imposed curfew and restrictions after police firing killed two people and wounded eight others, officials said.
The indefinite curfew was imposed in the Maibang area of Dima Hasao district, about 265 km southeast of Dispur, the capital city of Assam.
According to officials, police on Thursday fired upon hundreds of Dimasa tribals protesting the reported inclusion of the district as part of Greater Nagaland. The protesters vandalised railway property and damaged the railway tracks.
"During police action 10 people were wounded and of them two succumbed to bullet wounds," a local official said.
On Friday evening, protesters took out a silent rally carrying two bodies in Haflong town.
The killings have intensified protests in the district, following which some groups called for a 48-hour-long shutdown.
The shutdown and restrictions have affected normal life in several districts and hit the train traffic.
