ATHENS, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- Remnants of a mortar shell from World War II were found Thursday at Philopappou Hill in the Greek capital, a city that has witnessed many battles during the chaotic times, local media reported.

The shell, discovered by a Greek citizen at the hill opposite of the Acropolis in central Athens, was identified by police as remnants from World War II, Athens Municipal Radio reported.

The site was cordoned off, and military experts transferred the shell to a military base for further examination and destruction.

Many battles were fought in the capital city in the 1940s, including the Greco-Italian War and the Battle of Greece.

Philopappou Hill is a popular archaeological place visited by hundreds of locals and foreigners every day.
