BERLIN, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- Peter Pekarik and Hertha Berlin have settled on a contract extension, the German Bundesliga club confirmed in an official statement on Wednesday.

The Slovakia international stays with the "Herthaner" after putting pen to paper on a contract extension beyond summer 2018. The details of the contract extension have not been made public.

"Peter is an incredibly important player for Hertha. With his consistent performances he has become our Mr. Relieable. He is due to his experience a role model for our young players. We are therefore pleased that he will continue to player with us in future," Berlin sporting director Michael Preetz said.

The 31-year-old right back joined from league rivals Wolfsburg in the summer 2012. He made ever since 125 appearances and provided one goal.

"Hertha is my first choice. The club has grown to my heart and belongs practically to my family. I look forward to the challenges with this great team and will do my very best to continue this path with many young players," Pekarik told the club's official homepage.

Hertha Berlin sit on the 11th place of the Bundesliga standings. They clash with relegation-threatened Mainz for the opener of the 23rd round on Friday.
