AMMAN, March 11 (Xinhua) -- Jordan is likely to approve Israel's request to nominate Amir Weissbrod as the new ambassador to Amman, an official said Sunday.
The official told Xinhua that the Foreign Ministry is consulting with concerned authorities regarding the Israeli request as part of a process to reopen the Israeli embassy in Amman and allow for the return of the Israeli staff to the kingdom.
"We are likely to approve the nomination of Weissbrod as the ambassador of Israel to Jordan," said the official, who preferred anonymity.
Last week, Jordan said it received a letter from Israel nominating a new Israeli ambassador to the kingdom.
Jordanian officials have indicated recently that Jordan and Israel are going ahead to get ready to reopen the Israeli embassy, prepare for the return of Israeli embassy staff to Amman and resume relations.
Last month, Israel named Amir Weissbrod, a veteran diplomat, as the new envoy to Jordan.
Weissbrod has reportedly worked as a diplomat in Amman and is an expert in Middle East affairs and Islamic movements.
In January, Israel officially apologized for an incident in which an Israeli embassy guard killed two Jordanians, and the killing of a Jordanian judge Raed Zuaiter by Israeli troops in 2014.
In response, Jordan announced that it would allow the reopening of the Israeli embassy in Amman.
