GENEVA, March 15 (Xinhua) -- Aid that can assist 26,100 people for one month arrived in Douma on the outskirts of Damascus on Thursday, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said, adding its president was traveling with the convoy.

The 25-truck convoy from ICRC, Syrian Arab Red Crescent and the United Nations was carrying 5,220 food parcels and 5,220 bags of flour.

It's the third aid convoy to enter Douma since the military operations in Eastern Ghouta started late last month.

ICRC President Peter Maurer was traveling with the convoy to see first-hand the process of delivering the assistance and to talk with residents, the agency said.

Maurer said in an ICRC statement, "Over the last seven years the fighting has extracted an immensely painful human toll. We must find a way to lessen the suffering,"

"There are three crucial issues to improve: humanitarian access, the protection of civilians, and the humane treatment of detainees," he said

March 15 marks the eighth year of the Syrian conflict, said the ICRC.
