S. Korea's online shopping posts double-digit growth on Winter Olympics

SEOUL, April 4 (Xinhua) -- Online shopping in South Korea posted a double-digit growth in February as demand for food delivery services increased during the period of the Winter Olympics, a government report showed Wednesday.

Shopping in the cyberspace amounted to 7.9 trillion won (7.5 billion U.S. dollars) in February, up 11.6 percent from a year earlier, according to Statistics Korea.

The 23rd Winter Olympics, which was hosted by the country in the month, strengthened demand for food delivery services as people watched the games while eating convenient food.

Online sales of food and beverage jumped 41.1 percent, with the food services surging 70.6 percent.

The Lunar New Year's holiday, which fell in February this year, raised demand for agricultural, livestock and fishery products, which advanced 73.8 percent in the month.

Sales of home appliance and electronic products in the cyberspace jumped 22.2 percent, contributing to the overall online shopping.

Demand for clothing and auto parts logged a double-digit decline in the month.
