MADRID, May 11 (Xinhua) -- World No. 1 Rafael Nadal extended his consecutive winning streak on clay to 50 sets with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Diego Schwartzman here on Thursday, breaking John McEnroe's Open Era record of 49 straight sets won on a single surface.
"I won a difficult match against a very difficult player," the Spaniard great said. "They are big records. I really don't think much about that. Probably after I finish my career, it will be the time to think about it."
"Let's not talk about that any more and let's focus on what we have ahead."
The defending champion, continuing his pursuit of a record sixth trophy in Madrid, will face a familiar rival, last year's finalist Dominic Thiem of Austria in the quarterfinals. The latter came from one set down to beat Borna Coric of Croatia 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 to advance.
