ANKARA, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Turkish army is advancing in northern Iraq's Qandil to fight Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) militants, Turkey's ruling party's spokesperson said on Wednesday.
The move is part of an operation launched against the PKK militants in March, said Mahir Unal, spokesperson for the Justice and Development Party in southern Kahramanmaras province.
Turkey turns to Iraq to clear terrorism after completing the Operation Euphrates Shield and Operation Olive Branch to fight Kurdish militants, Unal said.
Local media on Monday reported that the Turkish army had pushed about 25 kilometers into northern Iraq towards Mount Qandil to clear PKK militants.
Pictures on social media also showed the presence of Turkish special forces in villages close to the Qandil region.
On Sunday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that counterterrorism operation in Syria's Afrin had been successfully carried out and "now it is time for Qandil."
The Qandil Mountains, located 40 km southeast of the Turkish border in Iraq's Irbil province, are used as the headquarters of the PKK.
