AMMAN, June 24 (Xinhua) -- The Jordanian foreign minister on Sunday warned against the rising tension in southern Syria, urging all parties to respect the de-escalation zone deal.
The solution to the crisis in Syria should be a political one, and Jordan is working with the U.S. and Russia to uphold a cease-fire in southern Syria, Ayman Safadi said on his official Twitter account.
"Jordan is doing all it can to meet the needs of 1.3 million Syrians. It cannot host more and the consequences of new escalation are the responsibility of those behind it," the minister said.
The continued fighting means more killing and destruction for the Syrians, Safadi noted.
Earlier in the day, a government official confirmed that Jordan cannot receive more Syrian refugees.
"Jordan has already received a large number of Syrian refugees and simply cannot receive more," the official told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
Last year, Jordan, the U.S. and Russia reached an agreement to establish a temporary de-escalation zone in southern Syria to help restore stability and allow the humanitarian aid into the region.
