AMMAN, July 15 (Xinhua) -- Royal Jordanian Airline (RJ) announced Sunday that it decided to halt services between Jordan's capital Amman and Iraqi city of Najaf from July 15, 2018 until further notice, in view of the security situation at Najaf Airport.
Najaf is the 9th station that RJ suspends its flights for security reasons. The other destinations include Mosul, Damascus, Aleppo, Tripoli, Benghazi, Misrata, Sanaa and Aden.
RJ operates previously four weekly scheduled flights to Najaf.
On Friday, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi pledged to meet the demands of protesters in the southern oil hub of Basra for jobs and basic services.
Hundreds of people protested in the region last week, storming the oil fields of West Qurna-1 and West Qurna-2 in the north of Basra city.
Also on Friday, dozens of demonstrators took to the streets in Iraq's holy Shiite provinces of Najaf and Karbala, as well as the provinces of Babil, Muthanna, Dhi Qar and Maysan, in protest of Iraqi government's failure of solving unemployment and lack of public services since 2003.
