SANAA, July 19 (Xinhua) -- Yemen's Houthi rebels said they fired a long-range ballistic missile toward a Saudi airport inside Saudi border city of Jazan on Thursday.

"Rocketry forces of our army targeted Jazan airport with the long-range ballistic missile, Badr 1," read a statement carried by Houthi-controlled Saba news agency.

Meanwhile, Saudi-owned Al Arabiya television reported that the Saudi air defense forces intercepted and destroyed the ballistic missile over Jazan.

Thursday's attack came a day after the Iranian-allied Yemeni Shiite Houthis said their drone air forces targeted the refinery of Saudi oil giant Aramco company in Saudi capital Riyadh.

Aramco said in a statement on its official Tweet account that the company had successfully controlled a minor fire due to an operational incident at the Riyadh Refinery (on Wednesday), but it did not referred to any drone attack alleged by Houthis.

Vital military and economic facilities in Saudi's border cities have been the most targeted in Houthi missile attacks, with the majority allegedly to have been intercepted.

The Houthi fighters seized control over much of the country's north, including the capital Sanaa, in September 2014, forcing internationally recognized President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi and his government into exile in Riyadh.

Saudi Arabia has been leading an Arab military coalition against Houthis in support of the Yemeni exiled government over the last three years, aiming to recapture northern cities and reinstate Hadi into power in Sanaa.
