RIO DE JANEIRO, July 23 (Xinhua) -- A late volley from former Argentina international striker Hernan Barcos gave Cruzeiro a 2-1 victory over Atletico Paranaense in Brazil's Serie A championship on Sunday.
The 34-year-old timed his run at the far post to perfection, latching onto a sumptuous cross from Robinho to lash a left-footed shot past goalkeeper Aderbar Santos.
Guilherme had given Atletico the lead in Belo Horizonte by converting from the penalty spot after Dede brought down Bruno Guimaraes in the box.
Uruguayan midfielder Giorgian De Arrascaeta equalized by heading in after Rafinha's lofted pass over the visitors' defense.
The result lifted Cruzeiro to third in the 20-team standings with 24 points from 14 matches while Atletico dropped to 19th with just 10 points.
Meanwhile, Palmeiras climbed to fifth after a 3-2 victory over Atletico Mineiro in Sao Paulo while Vasco da Gama rose to ninth by beating Gremio 1-0 in Rio de Janeiro.
In other matches on Sunday, Parana beat America Mineiro at home 1-0, Fluminense won 2-1 at Sport Recife, Bahia routed Vitoria 4-1 while Chapecoense and Santos played out a goalless draw.
