RIO DE JANEIRO, Jul. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Brazilian government expressed on Tuesday its condolences to Greece over the massive forest fires which swept over the Attica region, causing dozens of deaths.
So far, local authorities confirmed at least 74 deaths, including children and teenagers. Another 170 people were injured, some of whom severely.
The Greek government declared three days of national mourning for the tragedy.
The Brazilian government reported that there has been no record of Brazilians killed by the forest fires, which are the worst in over a decade.
"The Brazilian government has received with regret the news of the forest fires that occurred in the Attica region of Greece, which caused dozens of deaths and a large number of injuries, as well as economic losses," said a statement released by the Brazilian Foreign Ministry.
"In expressing its condolences to the families of the victims, the Brazilian government expresses its solidarity with the people and the government of Greece," the Ministry added.
At least three villages were already evacuated and rescue workers still have not accessed all areas. Authorities declared a state of emergency and are struggling to put out the fire, which has spread quickly due to strong winds.
