KIEV, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Ukraine is counting on the European Union (EU) support for the post-conflict recovery in the eastern region of Donbas, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said on Monday.
Kiev hopes that the interested EU states would provide targeted assistance to government-controlled areas in Donbas for infrastructure restoration and economic development projects, Poroshenko wrote on Facebook.
The issue of the possible EU aid for the conflict-affected region has been discussed during the 20th EU-Ukraine summit in Brussels last month, the Ukrainian leader said.
The more than four years of military confrontation between government troops and pro-independence armed groups caused a significant damage to Donbas infrastructure and forced more than 1.5 million people to flee their homes.
According to various estimates, the post-conflict recovery in Donbas would require between 20 billion U.S. dollars and 50 billion dollars in investment.
