DOHA, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- The Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas praised the efforts done by Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani to support the Palestinian people, Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported on Friday.

The remarks came during the meeting held between the two leaders on Thursday in Doha.

In an interview with QNA, Secretary-General of the Palestine Liberation Organization Saeb Erekat described the meeting as fruitful.

Qatar's emir stressed the need for Palestinian national unity, and renewed his support for the Palestinian project, said the QNA, quoting Erekat.

"We are with you. We are with Palestinian legitimacy. We are with the Palestinian project. We cannot accept any solution except the independent State of Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital on the 1967 borders," the emir was quoted as saying.

Abbas praised Qatar's position in rejecting the U.S. decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and move the U.S. embassy there.

The Palestinian president reiterated his readiness to achieve reconciliation in "the supreme Palestinian interest."

Meanwhile, Abbas hailed Qatar's efforts in the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip.

Qatar has maintained good relations with most Palestinian factions, including Hamas and Fatah.

Qatar has provided large sums of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, which has undergone Israeli blockade and assaults that massively damaged its infrastructure.
