PORTO ALEGRE, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- Peru captain Paolo Guerrero has revealed plans to extend his international career until the 2022 World Cup, believing he can still be a potent force into his late 30s.
Guerrero, 34, said his fitness and ambition meant that age would be no obstacle in his bid to play in football's showpiece tournament in Qatar, should Peru qualify.
The former Bayern Munich striker made the declaration during his first press conference since joining Internacional from Brazilian rivals Flamengo.
"Inter's structure is fantastic, among the best for getting me physically prepared and arriving in optimal condition for the next [World Cup], which is my desire and one of my goals," he said.
"I can firmly say that I'm happy and anxious to play as soon as possible. I'm going to give it all that I've got."
Guerrero officially completed a free transfer to the Porto Alegre club on Sunday, having agreed to a three-year deal reportedly worth 160,000 euros a month.
Peru's all-time leading scorer with 35 goals in 89 matches, Guerrero featured in all of his country's three World Cup group matches in Russia this summer, scoring in their 2-0 victory over Australia on June 26.
He was only cleared to play in the tournament in May when a Swiss court lifted a doping ban for his positive test for a cocaine metabolite. The 34-year-old is expected to debut for his new club in a home clash against Parana next Sunday.
