Macron, Merkel hold phone talk on Ukraine, Syria, migrants

PARIS, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday spoke with German Chancellor Angela Merkel about recent developments in Syria and Ukraine in addition to migrants flows that are challenging Europe's main powerhouses.

During the telephone conversation, Macron and Merkel discussed the conflict in Syria notably in Idlib region where they said, "humanitarian risks are very high," according to a statement by the French president's office.

Both leaders "emphasized the efforts needed to support an inclusive political process for lasting peace in the region," the statement added.

During their talk, the two leaders also focused on the relocation of migrants rescued in the Mediterranean, noting "the need to work on a coordinated European solution to fight against smugglers and to take in rescue vessels in the Mediterranean."

The statement added that the situation in Ukraine topped their talks.
