NEW YORK, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- Disney will open a Mickey Mouse pop-up exhibit in the United States in November as its most iconic cartoon character turns 90 this fall.

"From The True Original Exhibition to a year-long celebration in our parks around the world, we are honoring the deep connection that families and fans have made with Mickey and Minnie Mouse for nearly a century," Bob Chapek, Chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Consumer Products said in a press release.

Billed as an immersive experience that marks Mickey's global impact on popular culture and art, the exhibit will pack 16,000 square feet of space with historic and modern works inspired by the mouse.

Among the highlights will be a walk-through fluorescent black light section called Cosmic Cavern, which is created by artist Kenny Scharf and inspired by the Mickey Mouse watch.

"I want to make a place of fantasy and fun," Scharf said in a video for the exhibit. Colorful art and hidden Mickeys deck every inch of Cosmic Cavern, popping out from walls and hanging from ceilings.

Mickey Mouse was created in 1928 by Walt Disney and animator Ub Iwerks. The mouse first appeared in the animated short film "Plane Crazy," debuting publicly in a black-and-white cartoon "Steamboat Willie" that was the first Disney cartoon with synchronized sound. Since then, the famous mouse, who typically wears red shorts, large yellow shoes, and white gloves, has gone on to star in more than 130 films.

Disney will also host parties at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida and Disneyland in California, as well as theme parks in Shanghai and Hong Kong, Tokyo and Paris.
