THE HAGUE, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Dutch unions said Wednesday that security staff at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport will strike on Sept. 4 if no deal is reached to meet the workers' demands for a higher salary and more flexible working hours.

"Schiphol has already received a notice from us because a 24-hour strike has consequences for the airport and air traffic," said FNV Beveiliging, the largest trade union for security guards in the Netherlands. "Agreements can now be made to ensure that things go smoothly, passengers can be informed in time, tickets rebooked, flights canceled, and so on."

Schiphol estimated that some 200,000 travelers may not be able to fly on the day of the strike. Schiphol hopes to reach an agreement between the unions and the employers before the planned strike date.

The security guards at Schiphol have an average salary of 1,900 euros per month, according to Dutch television NOS. A full-time security guard currently works 38 hours a week at the airport. The unions want to reduce it to 34 hours a week.
