Canadian stock market closed lower Thursday

TORONTO, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Canada's main stock market closed lower Thursday as losses in the materials sector weighed on the market.

The Toronto Stock Exchange's benchmark Standard & Poor's/TSX Composite Index lost 20.55 points, or 0.13 percent, to end the day at 16,326.79 points.

The Canadian dollar fell 0.52 cents to 0.76.44 U.S. dollar.

The energy group rose 0.38 points, or 0.19 percent, while the financials sector slipped 0.32 points, or 0.1 percent.

Gold issues suffered big losses as Detour Gold Corp fell 4.5 percent to 10.32 Canadian dollars while New Gold dropped 5.4 percent to 1.30 Canadian dollars.

First Majestic Silver dipped 4.9 percent to 6.82 Canadian dollars while First Quantum Minerals lost three percent to 16.88 Canadian dollars.

The largest percentage gainer was Air Canada, which rose 1.1 percent to 26.82 Canadian dollars.

The most heavily traded shares by volume were Aurora Cannabis Inc., Canopy Growth Corp and Baytex Energy Corp.

Aurora Cannabis Inc. declined 0.25 percent to 8.03 Canadian dollars on 15.2 million shares and Canopy Growth Corp. jumped 4.22 percent to 54.30 Canadian dollars on 11.2 million shares while Baytex Energy Corp. soared 7.89 percent to 4.24 Canadian dollars on 10.2 million shares.
