Jordan, UNHCR stress need of continued support for Syrian refugees

AMMAN, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- Jordan and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on Monday stressed the need of continued support for the Syrian refugees in Jordan.

In a meeting in Amman between Jordanian King Abdullah II and the UNHCR Commissioner Filippo Grandi, the two looked into ties and the necessity of continuing services to meet the needs of the Syrian refugees in Jordan, according to a Jordanian royal court statement.

The two sides reviewed the burden on Jordan hosting a large number of Syrian refugees, as well as the impact on its economy, education, health and infrastructure.

King Abdullah II urged the international community to shoulder responsibilities for refugee-hosting countries, including Jordan, to continue supporting the refugees and host communities.

The UN official voiced appreciation for Jordan's role, stressing on the agency's keenness to reduce pressure on Jordan in this regard.

Also on Monday, Jordanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ayman Safadi met with Grandi, urging the international community to continue supporting Syrian refugees and the hosting countries.

Safadi said Jordan, which hosts 1.3 million Syrian refugees, bears burden that exceeded its capabilities and has done everything it could to help the Syrian refugees in spite of the limited resources.

The minister warned against negative consequences in light of drop in international support.

He added that Jordan supports the voluntary return of refugees, stressing the importance of international efforts in this regard.

The UN official commended the importance of the partnership with Jordan and its effective role in aiding the refugees and meeting their needs.
