SHANGHAI, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- Shanghai is further standardizing language usage on signs in the city's public spaces and scenic areas, aiming to bring more convenience for both locals and tourists.

Local authorities and philologists inspected Mandarin and English-language signs at the city's scenic areas, star-rated hotels, and tourist information centers, on Thursday, aiming to discover and correct mistakes.

Shanghai has continuously strengthened the standard usage of both Mandarin and English on public signs. However, there are still some incorrect words and misleading phrases.

Accurate signs and polite manners will help enhance living and traveling experiences in the city, according to Zhu Ye, deputy director of the National Center for Foreign Language Planning and Policy at Shanghai International Studies University.

Statistics showed that nearly 4.3 million overseas travelers and about 100 million domestic tourists visited Shanghai in the first half of 2018.
