SOFIA, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- An outbreak of African swine fever was confirmed for the first time in Bulgaria on Friday, the country's Food Safety Agency said in a statement on its website.
The disease has been found in a small farm in the village of Tutrakantsi, some 415 km east of Sofia and 160 km south of the border with Romania.
A total of seven pigs were fattened in the farm, the statement said.
All measures have been taken to eradicate the outbreak and prevent its spreading such as setting up a three-kilometer protection zone and a 10-km observation area around the outbreak, and clinical examinations of the animals, the statement said.
African swine fever has hit neighboring Romania, and on Tuesday Bulgaria has completed the construction of a wire fence on the border between the two countries to prevent the arrival of infected migratory animals.
