CAIRO, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- Arab League (AL) Secretary General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit urged on Sunday for an immediate halt of armed clashes between a number of militias in the Libyan capital Tripoli.

In a statement, Aboul-Gheit expressed "resentment" of the dangerous escalation of the security situation in Tripoli as armed clashes, which started in the city on Monday between some armed militias, are still ongoing.

Aboul-Gheit said the parties should abide by the cease-fire procedures taken by the Presidential Council for Libyan National Reconciliation.

The AL chief reiterated his call for the need to reach a comprehensive and final solution to the threats of armed militias that affect the state security and the country's national entity.

Southern Tripoli has witnessed violent clashes since Monday between government forces and armed militias, which have so far killed 41 people and injured 123 others.

The reasons for the clashes remain unknown, with growing tensions and military mobilization over the past few days between armed groups from outside and inside the city.

The Libyan Interior Ministry on Friday announced a cease-fire in Tripoli under the auspices of the United Nations. However, witnesses said heavy gun firing and explosions could still be heard in some parts of the capital city.
