MADRID, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- The number of people out of work in Spain rose by 47,047 in August, according to data published by the Ministry of Labor, Migration and Social Security on Tuesday .

The figures represent the worst data for the month since 2011, when 202,996 jobs were lost and is slightly worse than those registered in August 2017, when 46,400 people lost their jobs.

In total 3,182,068 people are now out of work in Spain.

The main reason for August's increased unemployment is the approaching end of the holiday season, with 39,758 of those working in the service sector losing their jobs.

This highlights the precarious nature of many of the short-term positions in the tourist industry and is one reason why August is traditionally a bad month for employment figures in Spain.
